About us

Introduction

The Academic Excellence Unit (AEU) is a pedagogy unit operating within the Quality and Development Deanship at the Islamic University of Gaza (IUG). The establishment of the AEU  is one of the main outcomes of the eTraining FinPal project, a joint project between IUG and the University of Tampere (UTA) in Finland (March 2017 – March 2020):

The project aims to improve pedagogical competencies and academic teaching capacity of staff members at Islamic University of Gaza. Furthermore, the aim is to establish an Academic Excellence Unit at Islamic University of Gaza that will offer a study programme on academic teaching to other Palestinian higher education institutions. The ultimate goal of the project is to enhance the quality of educational process in Palestinian higher education thus supporting societal development (https://research.uta.fi/finpal/).

Vision

In line with IUG strategic Plan 2015-2019 to become a pioneering beacon of academic excellence, the Academic Excellence Unit (AEU) aspires to promote a comprehensive quality teaching and learning strategies and pedagogical skills that lead to excellence in the academic and research performance of the teaching staff at IUG.

Mission

AEU mission is to enhance and regularly update the teaching competence and performance of the academic Staff to be able to provide high quality higher education to generations of Palestinian male and female youth enrolled in higher education institutions. AEU mission springs from IUG mission stated in IUG strategic Plan 2015-2019 that emphasizes excellence in all academic programs in an environment of promoting values of excellence, quality, empowerment, commitment, openness, dedication and social responsibility.

Objectives

The AEU seeks to achieve the following objectives during and after the duration of the FinPal project (March 2017 – March 2020):

1) To identify ongoing professional needs of IUG academics in terms of quality teaching and learning, assessment and conduction research.

2) To initiate creative and strategic (need-based) plans to enhance the pedagogical performance of academic staff.

3) To enhance and transfer the excellence of teaching and learning practices through networking and building local and international partnerships based.

4) To provide appropriate professional support that promotes best practices of teaching excellence in both face-to-face and online pedagogy of teaching and learning.

5) To promote the use of up-to-date technologies in teaching and learning in higher education institutions.

6)  To disseminate quality teaching through using technologies and video recording of quality teaching and learning sessions and lectures.

7)  To promote the culture of continuing professional development (CPD) among IUG academic staff and the impact of this development on youth and their contribution in sustainable local development.

8)  To build academic staff’s competence in teaching large classes in a context of disturbances and challenges.

Tasks and duties of the unit

1) Specifying academics’ ongoing professional needs regularly, documenting and reporting them to be dealt with.

2)  Preparing proposals and building partnerships that serve the promotion of excellence in teaching at higher education institutions.

3)  Preparing and implementing annual executive plans based on IUG strategic plan and IUG standard form of planning.

4)  Preparing and implementing professional training courses that meet prioritized professional needs in learning, assessment and research.

5) Conducting a variety of activities (workshops, seminars, meetings, newsletter, etc.) to promote awareness and transfer of up-to-date key pedagogical skills to IUG academics

6) Preparing regular progress and evaluation reports that focus on the strengths and weaknesses of academic programs offered by IUG to meet employability skills.

7) Building free access database of quality video lectures to maximizing quality teaching and learning

8)  Disseminating articles, journals, books and resources on academic excellence.

9)  Offering supervision and support to the network of professional trainers.
